What are the signs of a severe head or brain problem?

When Head Pain Spells Trouble

We've all had them ... the headache that won't seem to go away. Usually we know the cause: lack of sleep, too much fun, sinus congestion. Athletes may experience headaches during or after a game or practice as a result of heat illness, dehydration, or physical exertion. There are, however, some types of headaches that warrant medical attention.

Headaches can be a result of severe conditions such as cerebral hemorrhage, brain tumor, concussion, or an aneurysm. While such conditions are rare, an athlete who has received a blow to the head, such as a boxer or football player, may be at risk. Here are the warning signs that signal a severe problem:

  • A sudden, severe headache
  • A headache along with fever, stiff neck, rash, mental confusion, or speaking difficulties
  • Headaches following a head injury of any kind
  • Chronic head pain, a progressively worsening headache, or pain that increases with coughing, exertion or movement
Headaches happen to everyone, but serious causes of headaches are rare. They are, however, real and need to be addressed. Keeping tabs on your symptoms is the best way to manage the situation and make sure you get the care you need.
